The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a strip of land that runs across the Korean Peninsula and serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea. The DMZ is 250 kilometers long and four kilometers wide and is one of the most heavily militarized borders in the world.
The DMZ was established in 1953 as part of the armistice agreement that ended the Korean War. The agreement stipulated that a "demilitarized zone" be established to separate the two Koreas and that no military activities would take place within the zone. However, the DMZ has become a major military stronghold for both North and South Korea, with thousands of troops and weapons stationed on either side.
